Nothosaurus was a slender, semi-aquatic reptile that lived during the Triassic period, roaming the warm, shallow seas of what is now Europe over 210 million years ago. Its name, meaning “false lizard”, reflects the uncertainty early pale- ontologists had when classifying this uniquely adapted marine reptile.
As one of the earliest marine reptiles to flourish after the end-Permian extinction, Nothosaurus represents an important evolutionary step in the transition from land-dwelling reptiles to fully aquatic forms like plesiosaurs.
