AMMOLITE
“Ammolite” is the name given to the colorful and wonderful ammonite fossils found in southern Alberta, Canada. Their shells underwent a unique fossilization process over 75 million years. Exposure to pressure, temperature and geographic location caused the shell to mineralize into a rainbow of iridescent colors. Since 1981 it is recognized as a gemstone by the CIBJO colored stones commission. Name given to the colorful and wonderful ammonite fossils found in southern Alberta, Canada. These unique treasures can only be found in one location worldwide - in the famous bear paw formation in the southwest region of Alberta. The specimens are mined on the native American black foot reservation, who themselves operate and oversee the excavation and production.
Buffalo rock mining has started a program which brings funding and education back to the reservation, where young black foot natives are specifically trained in the skill sets necessary to excavate and prepare these delicate gemstones and high quality grade fossils.
Together we have established a unique partnership, sourcing and trading the finest quality of ammolite specimens on the market.
