ASTEROCERAS AMMONITE
Asteroceras is an extinct genus of ammonite—a type of marine mollusk related to modern squids and octopuses. It lived during the early Jurassic period, around 190 million years ago.
These creatures had tightly coiled, spiral shells with strong rib-like patterns, often giving them a star-like appearance (which is where the name Asteroceras, meaning “star horn,” comes from). They lived in the ocean and likely moved by jet propulsion, similar to today’s cephalopods.
Asteroceras fossils are commonly found in Europe, especially in England, and are popular among collectors because of their distinctive shape and well-preserved details.
