Born in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, Medvedev was deeply influenced by the rich tapestry of Eastern and Western art that surrounded him. Pursuing his passion, Medvedev studied at the Art Institute in Moscow, where he honed his skills in Western European art.
In the 1970s, a visit to St. Petersburg’s esteemed collections ignited Medvedev’s fascination with intarsia—a meticulous art form involving the inlay of finely cut stones to create intricate designs. This encounter led him to dedicate himself to mastering this Renaissance-era technique.
Emigrating to the United States in 1980, Medvedev transitioned from painting to focus entirely on gem intarsia. He began by crafting smaller pieces, such as pendants, allowing him to refine his techniques. As his confidence and expertise grew, he embarked on creating elaborate intarsia boxes, which have since become his signature works.
Medvedev’s creations are celebrated for their vibrant geometric designs, reminiscent of the motifs from his homeland. He meticulously selects and assembles a diverse array of gemstones—including lapis lazuli, jasper, malachite, and rare materials like dinosaur bone and precious opal—into harmonious compositions. Each piece is a testament to his patience, precision, and deep understanding of gem materials.
His exceptional artistry has garnered international acclaim, with exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, which hosted a solo exhibition of his work from 1991 to 1993.
